Maurice Carême (1899-1978): Cat & Sun

Translated by Timothy Adès

Careme

Cat opened its eyes
The sun popped in
Cat closed its eyes
The sun stopped in.
And long after tea
When the cat-nap’s done
In the dark I see
Two smidgens of sun.
