VERLEGENHEITSGEDICHT
Die Engel singen ihre Lieder droben,
wir andern aber haben unsre Stimmen
irdischerseits und leis erhoben,
damit sie keinen sonst ergrimmen.
Die Töne fliegen durch den tauben Äther,
auf daß sie irgendwo auf diesem Sterne
Gehör und Neigung finden. Wenig später
erklingt ihr Echo. Doch aus weiter Ferne.AWKWARDNESS
The angels sing their songs on high,
but we have kept our voices low,
earthbound and soft, we others, so
we cause no animosity.
Through the deaf ether flies our song,
in hopes of finding on our star
a favoured hearing. Before long,
the echo sounds: but that’s from far.“The East German government allowed him to serve as a guest professor at the University of Texas in 1972 and at the University of Warwick in England in 1975.”
