The Good Life

Francis Combes (1953)

Translated by Timothy Adès

On the banks of the Rhine
In my grandmother’s land
The weather was fine
The sky pale as wine
The lime trees were grand
For this nipper of nine
We were sitting outside
Our table was there
Not far from the bar
In the gold-blond air
It was close to a weir.
Leave nothing untried!
Life is trouble and toil
I’d been given, I know,
Nibbles sizzled in oil
The Rhine rolling slow
(Life’s fun for our species
But hard for small fishes)
